There has been a debate about charging for Teachmeets. In the UK, Teachmeets are free but usually have a number of sponsors which will be advertising at the event. In Ireland, CESI charged an entry fee for its first few Teachmeet to cover the cost of the food and venue rental without having the need for any sponsorship. An advantage of charging is that attendees are more likely to turn up if they have paid.

If you are charging for the event, EventBrite is becoming the norm as it allows people to pay by credit card online in a secure fashion. Eventbrite will transfer the money to a designated account. It will also supply you with a list of attendees that you can use for name tags.

Registering for the event should be online if possible. Eventbrite can be used for a free event although a google doc form can be used. It is also possible to use the wiki page on irishteachmeet wiki to register people.

If you are charging, everybody pays including speakers and you need to make sure that speakers register as sometimes they forget to do so.

You will need a welcome desk at the door: a minder for those who just turn up, also a marker and some labels for those persons' name labels!
Name tags are very important as it helps to breaks the ice among people. If many of your attendees are on twitter- leave space for a twitter handle.
